Pride and Persistence ~ Excerpt and Giveaway!

Hey Everyone! Today, it's my pleasure to welcome Jeanna Ellsworth! She has a new book out, and she's here to share an excerpt with us!

Without further ado...

I am so excited to share a bit of Pride and Persistence with you. Thank you, Candy, for having me on your blog! An author loves to talk about her work but sometimes it is difficult to narrow down what to share. I have chosen a scene that I particularly like.  At this point in the book, it has been several days since Darcy’s horse accident and Colonel Fitzwilliam saw immediately that Lady Catherine would get in the way of Darcy’s healing so he has been filtering what his aunt knows about Darcy’s condition. Unfortunately, Elizabeth is unaware that Colonel Fitzwilliam has been limiting what Lady Catherine knows. Sometimes I wonder if people were just more honest then it would cause less problems in the world . . . but then again, Elizabeth’s honesty in this scene leads to trouble. Also of note is that Elizabeth has had to endure 6 weeks of poorly made food from the parsonage. She relishes the rare time she is treated to food from Rosings . . . but the power of Rosings’ food is not lost on Lady Catherine, in fact, little is lost to Lady Catherine in this scene! It is slightly long, but I think you will see why I could not stop it early. Here is the excerpt. Happy reading!

Lady Catherine sat down and then leaned back in her chair and smiled. “You know, I never told you so, but I like you. You have just enough impertinence to keep one on one’s toes. I imagine your ability to say exactly what you are thinking comes in handy while dealing with Darcy’s limitations now.”
Elizabeth wasn’t sure where she was going with this. “Thank you, I think. I am not sure if that was a compliment or a veiled barb.”
“See, that is exactly what I am talking about. No one can doubt what you are thinking because your expression shows the truth of what you say.”
“I have been told that several times. That is why I sometimes struggle to perform my designated role with Mr. Darcy.”
“And what role is that?”
“I mean in dealing with his memory problems. I find it hard to placate him and help keep his anxiety down. Often I am forced to hide the truth from him to avoid setbacks.”
Breakfast arrived and trays were set up in front of each lady. The servants brought in mountains of food. Elizabeth noticed cinnamon-and-sugar-powdered rolls, perfectly cooked eggs, at least ten slices of bacon, and some sort of steaming hot, puffy, buttery dish that was falling as it cooled. She didn’t know what to eat first. “What is that puffy dish?”
“German pancakes. It is a recipe that my French cook found on her tour last year. I try to keep my staff well-educated, so I sent her on a two-week tour of Europe to learn new methods and new foods. This is one of my favorites. Here, let me get you a piece. You dust it with powdered sugar and maple syrup. It is truly a delight.”
Elizabeth watched the butter still boiling on the top of the German pancake and was awed at the speed in which the staff must have delivered such a perfectly executed array of food. “Do you always eat this well this early in the morning?”

“Only when I have special visitors. I am an early riser, so they were prepared for me, and it did not take long for them to add to the food. I waited a few minutes before attending to you so that the food would be ready in time. You must try it.”
Lady Catherine handed Elizabeth the steaming, fluffy, buttery pancake. Elizabeth did as she was instructed and sprinkled the pancake with powdered sugar and poured a bit of syrup on it as well. Her fork could cut it easily, and she noticed that it was not bready like a pancake, but rather egg-based. She glanced up at Lady Catherine, who was waiting patiently for her to try it.

What do I think I'll read next? I hope to start on The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I know, it's pretty amazing that I have NOT read these books yet! But I'm going to change that soon! :)

What am I currently reading?  I'm currently reading Allegiant (Divergent Series) by Veronica Roth. I am loving this series! I'm about half way through Allegiant, and I'm a little nervous about what's going to happen because I haven't heard many good things about this last book. I'll let you know!

What did I recently finish reading? I finished reading  Insurgent (Divergent, Book 2) by Veronica Roth. Loved it! Although, I was getting a little irritated with Tris and Tobias withholding information from each other.

What do I think I'll read next? I think I'm going to read The Secret Betrothal - A Pride and Prejudice Alternate Path by Jan Hahn. In this book, Elizabeth is secretly engaged to someone other than Mr. Darcy! **gasp!**

Dystopia Reading Challenge 2014

Hey everyone! I found a Dystopian reading challenge to join!

This is perfect because I have a lot of Dystopian books on my TBR pile! Because I have already read 6 dystopian books this year before finding this challenge, I will start off with level 2, Rebel, with the remaining books I have left.

Here's what I have to read at the moment:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Insurgent by Veronica Roth
Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Aberrant by Ruth Silver

ICONS by Margaret Stohl (I just found ICONS this past weekend while I was at the LA Festival of Books. I just happened to walk by her book signing and picked up a book!)

Btw, the six books I've already read and loved were The Lunar Chronicles and The Maze Runner series.

Consequences by C.P. Odom ~ My Review

Consequences by C.P. Odom

Publication Date: December 17, 2013
Publisher: Meryton Press
Pages: 278
Received: paperback from the publisher for my honest review.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Consequences is a unique Pride and Prejudice retelling broken down into two sections. The first gives you a chance to see what could happen if Elizabeth rejected Darcy at the parsonage in Hunsford, and never saw him again at Pemberley. How devastating to her family that could be. The second shows what could happen if she accepted him right then, before all her prejudices are corrected.

I found the first book hard to read. It’s just so sad. The series of events set off by that refusal is tragic. But as unpleasant as it is, it's interesting to see how badly things could have turned out; the harsh realities of life. And I liked that, despite everything, Lizzy stays strong.

As for the second half, I would have liked to see Darcy and Elizabeth spend a little more time together while Elizabeth is learning who Mr. Darcy really is. Her opinion of him changes by observing him and Georgiana, since Darcy never writes that letter to clear his name of all the injustices she accused him of.

I loved how insightful Charlotte is! In this story, she puts more of an effort into making Elizabeth listen to reason. Not only does she tell Elizabeth of her suspicion that Darcy might be in love with her, and encourage Elizabeth to say yes should he propose to her. Reminding her of how dire it would be for her and her family if her father should die. She also reminds her how being with Darcy would most likely bring Jane and Bingley together again. And maybe she shouldn’t believe everything Wickham says.

The ending of Consequences definitely gave me the warm fuzzies! I would recommend for any Pride and Prejudice fan! Just push through that first section! ;)

What did I recently finish reading? I finished reading The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner Series #2) by James Dashner. This was so good! It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time!

What do I think I'll read next? I don't really have a plan. I think I'll read Insurgent (Divergent, Book 2) by Veronica Roth. After watching the movie, I wanted to finish reading this series. But my daughter wanted me to read The Maze Runner series first.
